Maker Spotlight – Get To Know The Face Behind The Brand.
Meet Kyle from KaseyBeaux. Kyle is from Chicago, IL andI started making polymer clay earrings at the start of the pandemic as a fun hobby to keep herself busy during quarantine. As the months rolled on and her skills increased, she started her online store. She was selling mostly to friends and family at first, but as time has gone on, friends have shared the pieces they’ve bought and then friends of friends have seen them and shared them with friends of friends of friends. Kyle feels so lucky to have found a medium that has kept her so busy during quarantine and made it possible for her to work from home. Kyle finds inspiration from architecture and fine art. The shapes in modern and contemporary art inspire the shapes of her pieces. She loves playing with the symmetry or asymmetry in pieces based on architecture of buildings she sees along her neighborhood walks and online. Kyle likes to pull colors from art she sees in the many museums around Chicago. She finds that if she’s left to her own devices, she falls into a pattern of using the same palette. Looking at an artist and using their palette, helps to inspire her to use new and interesting color combinations that hopefully will appeal to a wider audience than if she used the same palette time after time. Before everything shut down Kyle used to teach swing dancing and lindy hop. While she may not be able to go out and dance with her friends right now, she is biding her time solo dancing until the dance floors open back up. When this Leo/Virgo cusp is making her jewelry, she loves watching terrible TV. She has watched more episodes of reality television and CW shows than she cares to admit. Basically she will watch anything that she can pay minimal attention to so that she can keep herself entertained without losing focus on her work.
KaseyBeaux specializes in colorful, bold statement earrings made from polymer clay. Kyle welcomes custom orders. Please DM her if you have any questions or see anything on her page that you would like to purchase. Her website link is in her IG bio.
Here are some words from Kyle:
-What made you want to start creating?-
“A few years ago I was working in the performing arts and working service jobs in between gigs. When things shut down last April, I lost my sources of income and was in desperate need of something to do with my newly found free time. Polymer clay earrings were blowing up on TikTok and Instagram and I saw an opportunity to do something fun to fill my time.”
-What is your MOST FAVORITE item you have created?-
“I have a pair of earrings called the Amanda that I absolutely love. They are large studs with clay “fringe.” I am a bit obsessed. I made them in the middle of the night once and then immediately made them in 10 colors the following day.”
-What makes your shop unique?-
“I work very hard to come up with unique styles that aren’t in other peoples’ shops. If there is a shape that is a bit more of a “staple” shape in the community I try to give it a unique spin, whether it’s a unique color or a special technique. One of my favorite spins is my ombre hoops. I spent a long time trying to figure out how to make a kind of polymer clay hoop that I hadn’t seen before and then finally came up with using a skinner blend to make one of a kind hoops that fade from one color to the next.”
Would you like to share any family info? Pets?-
“I live in Chicago with my partner and my Old English Bulldog, Bowie. Bowie is 8 years old and the absolute love of my life. He is the grumpiest, floppiest, most loving old man and I don’t know what I’d do without him. My boyfriend is alright too, I guess. Lol”
-What is the story behind your business name?-
“When I was trying to figure out a business name, I kept reading stories about how you shouldn’t overthink a name or you’ll never start your business. I wanted to pick something that would mean something to me so that it would never feel like it had aged badly. KaseyBeaux is named after my childhood dog, Kasey, and my current dog, Bowie. I’ve also used Kasey as an online alias for years, so it only felt fitting to use it as a business name haha.”
